Addendum to the last post
I think it is challenging to not be good at something. I know that sounds snobby and self-righteous but I really believe that a lot of us middle-class children spend most of out adolescence and college years doing pretty well with minimal effort. But teaching isn't quite that easy. You don't just jump in and succeed. Especially not here. The good thing is that you can keep trying. Next semester I can work on the skills that were lacking this semester. It's just hard to realize that I'm sending kids away with my infant teaching abilities. What are they missing out on while I perfect my skill? I think that is part of the problem in urban education - you get young, inexperienced teachers like me who use this as a training ground. Once we improve we leave and the city kids get more inexperienced teachers. And they miss out on all the knowledge that comes with years in the profession.
