Catch-up
I know that I will forever kick myself for the lack of postings. Maybe my New Year's resolution should be to write an entry every day. Heaven knows I'll never have a first year of teaching again and I certainly will never have a stint quite like this. This past week as been surprisingly enjoyable (enjoyable is perhaps a bit strong but considering my basis for comparison...)
Anything after the fire will probably seem dull but I was recently reminded of a teacher-student conversation from early September that still amuses me. I was walking around the classroom assisting students when one student overheard me say to another student "Well this is part of what happened but the actual event..." and blurted out "Why do you have to use all those big words like actual?!" I of course have never been particularly adept at suppressing laughter, but I struggled to come up with some response and finally said to Daquan "Well, I did go to college?" All of a sudden his anger was overcome by interest and asked to know where I went. "Oh, it was in Chicago" It was then that Daquan asked me "Chicago? Do you still live in Chicago?" Yes darling, and I make that 13 hour commute everyday to see your lovely self.
I am also still mildly annoyed at a pre-Christmas vacation 8th grade meeting that took place. During the meeting our administrator reminded everyone that February is Black History Month. It was all fine until she proceeded to ask the creative writing teacher to work with the seventh grade social studies teacher on creating projects. Not that I mind being passed over for extra work but excuse me history is what I teach every single day. But I forgot, just because my race happens to be different I couldn't possible know anything useful or generate any useful ideas.
I better go get some work done but look for a flood of posts in the near future.

Preach on sister! Just tell them how "Johnson" is a slave name you've had to shamefully live under for all these years in order to make it in this Vanilla Wafer World. Change your name to Val X and get a wicked tight perm and you'll be given extra lessons to plan in no time. Oh yeah, be sure to bring up that Black History month is the shortest month of the year, that's diversity/PC gold. Alright later.

What's funny about your comment is that another teacher once told me I was the first white Johnson they had ever met. WHY IS THE WORLD STILL SO SEGREGATED WE DON'T EVEN KNOW EACH OTHER'S NAMES? Okay. I'm done.
