Issues

Don't take it personally. Don't take anything personally.

I heard that over and over before starting this job and to be honest, I don't. I know a few other teachers at other schools who have fallen into that trap and am blessed I was able to avoid that minefield. However am I really sensitive about using my textbook. It's this bizarre disconnect in my brain that I can't seem to get over. I know at this middle school, we really need to read informational text on a daily basis level that I should be using them much more than I do. They are practically the only supplies I have. And the ones we have aren't even that bad as far as bias and exclusion of material is concerned, but I spent so much of college focusing on how they hurt education that I almost feel guilty using them. More than anything this year is a test of ideology.

P.S. Most of my kids could not tell me what 1/3 of 6.00 was today. It was terrifying.

Well at least you don't teach math so you can rest easy. Now if they couldn't tell you what year the Battle of 1812 was then you can begin giving a nice long sideways glance at that bottle of anti-freeze. Looks a little like Lemon/Lime Koolaid doesn't it...
