25 Days Too Many

Today one of my students pointed at me accusingly and said "dumb white people." Because she happens to be a few crayons short of a box I didn't do much except say "I don't represent all white people." The girl next to her chimed in anyway and said, "yeah, Miss Johnson's black." Slightly taken aback I quickly glanced down to make sure my skin hadn't morphed over the course of the day and gave her a funny look. "You know," she said, "if you're not a rich white person then you're actually black." Talk about distorted racial identity.

In other news City Honors was ranked #4 in Newsweek's list of top American High Schools. Boy does that make me want to get out of this wasteland and go teach at home.

Also one of my kids was humming "You're the one that I want" from Grease. But later when I said "chill out" a girl shot me a look and said "stop making up new language."

Weirdos.
