The onset of the cold
Now that we are closing out the first fourth of year I am becoming increasingly more aware of the termination of my committment to my school district. That causes me to confront my future yet again. There is much less trepedation now than graduating from college and somehow there seem to be more options. Of course I am eternally confused and pulled in many directions. I've said it before, but I really think I love teaching. The problem is I feel much more committed to urban education, but it's more challenging, more stressful and I'm not as good at it. Likewise, I feel pulled to a more sophisticated group of students (i.e. high school) but I have a skill at planning for middle school students. Right now I have my kids tracing their feet and writing about the Stamp Act, Boston Massacre, etc. as the "steps to the American revolution." I do a lot of cutesy things that would never fly in high school. This entire unit is filled with plays and protest posters and my extended football game analogy. Plus, I really enjoy teaching foundational skills and processes. So I'm at a crossroads. More and more I think I'll continue in the classroom next year. It's just a question of which classroom.
I haven't been writing in here as regularly, which is a mistake. I hate any occurance to go undocumented. For example, our perpetually awful class was really getting on my nerves so I told them that if I wanted to be a babysitter I would have, because I'd make a hell of a lot more money. Instead of shutting them up I inadvertantly causes this huge classroom debate (unstructured and crazy, of course) over whether or not that would be true. Naturally their math skills were comical as they tried to calculate how much money I'd make if I got two hundred dollars for each of them each week.
Also, I am currently carring the scars of a recent attack. Thankfully this is nothing that resembles The Wire - instead my window decided to leap out of the door. I was grabbing my things and going to lunch - a task that required me to open my door. That is when the window pane decided to fall out of the door and directly onto my chest and arms. I only suffered a minor cut, but nevertheless. You are never safe in these crazy schools.
